Goodbye SSL-Explorer, hello Adito

I have been wondering why 3sp hasn’t issued any updates for the community edition SSL-Explorer. I found out today it is because 3sp was bought by Barracuda Networks and the SSL-Explorer product has been discontinued. So for those of you that were lucky enough to get RC17 before they closed the doors, back it all up and put it somewhere safe.

On a related note, a community project named Adito is working off a fork of the SSL-Explorer RC17 code base. They are making extraordinary progress in getting Adito fully GPL, along with a plug-in database! So major congrats and thanks to everyone who got this running again. I am curious actually, as to how many former 3sp programmers are working on Adito?

For those that are in the dark, Adito/SSL-Explorer is an SSL VPN project that allow one to access resources inside a firewalled network over SSL. SSL runs on port 443 which is more commonly known as HTTPS, or secure browsing so it is rarely (read, never) blocked. So its a great way to cut down on the amount of holes you have to poke in your firewall while still allowing people access to the resources they need.

Yup. Been running RC17 for a while, and it just works. It hadn’t occurred to me that there’s been no update in a while. Glad to hear about the fork – I’ll definitely check it out.

    Happy Holidays!

It looks good but it is still missing many plugins and features of the ssl-explorer enterprise edition. If you have got the free 2 user license for enterprise edition then hang onto it for a while more !

Agreed. This is why I am sticking with RC17 for the foreseeable future. I didn’t get a licence, since I am pretty much the only person that uses it. But its nice to know that this app isn’t going to just fade away into obscurity.

I removed RC17 and installed Adito because I was experiencing a couple bugs – one with the Agent timeout values getting multiplied by 1000 and the other with the Agent not cleanly exiting on shutdown.

Have any of you guys experienced this? I should go download RC17 again… btw: how were you able to obtain a free license for enterprise?

BTW: I’m still experiencing the same bugs under Adito 0.9.1 that I saw on RC17. Unfortunately, I don’t think there are many developers working on it in my estimate, due to the longer response times on the bug tracking site.

I never received a free license, I downloaded the source and built from that. I think I still have the source for RC17 around somewhere, drop me an email if you want me to send it to you.
